Growing up in the Church, I remember countless felt-board lessons and carefully planned skits that highlighted God’s mighty acts in Scripture. Even now, as an adult, it stirs me with hope to consider what He has done.

Isaiah 63:7 (CEB) says, “I will recount the Lord’s faithful acts; I will sing the Lord’s praises, because of all the Lord did for us, for God’s great favor toward the house of Israel. God treated them compassionately and with deep affection.”

Taking time to recount the mighty acts of God throughout biblical history is a humbling and hope-stirring practice. Who God is today is who God has always been. Let’s take a look at three moments in Exodus, and reflect on what we learn about God through a series of mighty acts.

God Delivers — Israel Flees Egypt

“And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent” (Exodus 14:13-14 ESV).

The Lord’s deliverance of His people out of Egypt is one of the most profound examples of God’s mighty acts in Scripture. It may be a story you know well, but don’t skip over the opportunity to meditate on how mightily He delivered His people when they were in such dire need. As God delivered Israel, so will He deliver you. How can you trust in the Lord for deliverance in your life today?

A roaring waterfall in the rocks shows God's mighty power.

God Provides — Manna from the Sky and Water from the Rock

“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you…” (Exodus 16:4a ESV).

“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel” (Exodus 17:6 ESV)

After the Israelites left Egypt, they had nothing. They were utterly dependent on the One who delivered them to provide for them in the wilderness. And He did in a miraculous way. As God provided for Israel, so will He provide you. How can you depend on the Lord to provide for you today?

God Sustains — Defeat over Enemies

Immediately after you read of God’s provision through the manna and water from the rock, you come to a story about an enemy attacking the people of Israel. A young Joshua goes down to battle as the story picks up…

“Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun” (Exodus 17:11-12 ESV).

Through the partnership and support of Aaron and Hur, the Lord sustained Moses, which led to Joshua’s victory in battle. Even as they traversed the unknown after the exodus, the Lord never left them. As God sustained Israel, so will He sustain you. How can you lean on the Lord to sustain you today?

It’s easy to only remember the big moments, but it is profound to consider that the Lord continued to go before His people by providing and sustaining in the days, weeks, and months that followed one mighty act.
