I have an old bookshelf in my office that came from my grandparents’ home after they passed. They both lived into their early 90s and passed away just a few months apart, just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary. On the top shelf I keep a collection of prayer journals that I have had since I was a young teenager.

I’m nearing 20 years of journaling my prayers to the Lord, and those writings are a precious, and sometimes hilarious, reminder of the many things that have occupied my interest and concern throughout the course of my life.  They can really fuel my faith for the future.

One of my favorite ways to spend quiet time with the Lord is to read and reflect upon Scripture and then to read an old prayer from my collection of journals. Reading Scripture helps me to remember the powerful ways that God has worked throughout history, and reading my old prayers helps me reflect on God’s powerful acts in my own life. Both of these practices fuel my faith and provide me with daily inspiration to trust in God.

Consider adopting this practice for yourself by incorporating these two practices to fuel your faith.

A woman writing in a journal shows how to fuel your faith through reflecting on God's powerful works in your life.

Reflect On God’s Powerful Works In Scripture

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember Your miracles of long ago. I will consider all Your works and meditate on all Your mighty deeds.” Psalm 77:11-12 (NIV)

Reading your Bible is the most tried and true practice for remembering God’s character and reflecting on His powerful works throughout human history. If you are struggling to believe that God will provide for you, take time to read the stories of Ruth, Moses, David, and Esther. You can practice fueling your faith when you read that even through their failures and mistakes, the Lord still went before them.

Reflect on God’s Powerful Works in Your Own Life

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)

If you’ve ever kept a prayer journal, grab it from the shelf, or dig it out of that old drawer. Pick a random entry and read through it. What do you remember from that season in your life? What do you remember about how God carried you through it?

If you don’t already practice the spiritual discipline of journaling, start today! Grab a blank journal or even just a single piece of paper. You could even begin your time by thinking back over the course of your life. Then write down significant ways that you remember God providing for or sustaining you.

Break up your life into chapters, decades, or seasons of time. Spend a few minutes writing down the things you remember. Maybe there was a time you needed work and you prayed and prayed for a new job. It may have been facing an illness or suffering through singleness or infertility. Write down the ways you remember God comforting you through those challenging seasons.

As you read, reflect, and remember, let your faith be fueled by continuing to look to God’s powerful acts, both throughout Scripture and in your own life. Let this daily inspiration both sustain you through challenging times and delight you in the joyful seasons of life.
