Tears come very easily for me. If I see someone else crying—even in a TV commercial—my eyes start watering up in empathy. But sometimes, I feel that tightening in my chest that tells me tears are near the surface, and I have no idea why. Something is going on deep in my heart, and I’ve yet to figure out what it is. Maybe you could use a morning prayer for emotional healing like I could.

Psalm 42:5 says, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Whatever it is that’s going on in our hearts, God knows about it, and He’s ready to help us heal. Pray with me.

Woman's open hands in a morning prayer for healing.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I’m grateful that you know my heart better than I do. Those wounds from my past that I can’t even remember? You know every one. As I explore my story with safe people, help me not to forget to involve you every step of the way.

Lord, I know better than to push my emotions down to the basement of my belly. I know that things hidden in the darkness fester, like mold in a soggy closet. But I’m afraid. Help me not to be afraid. Remind me that you are with me in my journey toward wholeness.

It’s easy to consult a physician and get a prescription to heal what ails me physically. It’s much harder to heal what ails my heart. Thank you that you care about me body and soul. So when I am feeling at my lowest, lift up my head. Remind me of your presence and your enduring love. I am convinced that you will never leave me and that nothing can separate me from your love.

As I face another day, Lord, give me tangible evidence of your care for me so that I might be encouraged. Just a bird on the feeder outside my window, reminding me that you provide what I need—sometimes through other people. Or a kind stranger smiling at me to remind me that I can find my joy in you. Help me to notice the small things and to be grateful for them.

Each day is a gift, Lord. I know you came that I might have abundant life. I ask you today to heal my heart so that I can fully experience that life today.

It’s in your precious name that I pray. Amen.

Now listen to this short devotional from Abide based on Psalm 42:5.

If you find yourself today in a pit of despair, I would encourage you to talk to a safe friend. Or perhaps your wounds require the help of a professional counselor. There is no shame in that. As I write this, I’m praying for you, that you will seek God’s guidance for your emotional health. Repeat this morning prayer for emotional healing as often as you need it.

I also recommend that you download the Abide app. Every day there is a devotional like the one above, along with guided meditations and Bible-based sleep stories that will help comfort your soul.
