When asked if I would be willing to lead a time of spiritual devotion at our upcoming weekly staff meeting, I answered yes despite feelings of inadequacy. And the more I prepared, the more anxious I became. Doubts like, “Who do you think you are?” or “What can you say that the others don’t already know?” filled my mind. Knowing I would trip over my words, I doubted my ability to share a good enough message. What helped me was knowing God would help me despite my lack of natural skills. I needed to hear Him say, “You are more than enough.”

Do you struggle with feelings of inadequacy?

God says we are more than enough because He is with us, giving us what we need to do the tasks asked of us.

Moses’ Struggle with Self-doubt

We are not alone in our self-doubt. Look at what Moses said to God in Exodus 4:10 in the New Living Translation: “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.”

Moses thought he wasn’t good enough. But God didn’t agree. God answered, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (Exodus 4:12 NIV).

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and slowly release it. Read those words again in the New Living Translation: “So go now. And I will be with your mouth. I will teach you what to say” (Exodus 4:12 NLT).

God said He would be with Moses, helping him speak when speaking wasn’t Moses’ skill. God chose Moses despite his inadequacies and self-doubt. He chooses us too.

Second Corinthians 12:9 in the NIV says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

When we doubt our worth, we can rest in the knowledge that God uses us even when we feel weak or lack the skills needed. God doesn’t ask for perfect people. He takes what we have and makes it more than enough.

We are More Than Enough Because God Loves Us.

Our worth is never about us—our skills, our knowledge, or how much we can contribute. It’s about who God says we are. We are “dearly loved children”

As you take a deep breath say, “I am.” Now release that breath slowly saying, “God’s dearly loved child.”

Ephesians 5:1-2 in the NIV tells us, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

A small girl hold a flower up to her mom's nose knowing that she is more than enough as God's beloved child.

God’s desire is that we follow His example—that we walk in the way of love. What is the way of love? It’s noticing others’ needs and meeting them as we are able. Then God takes our attempts at helping, no matter how small they seem to us and multiplies the results like Jesus did when using the little boy lunch in John 6.

Jesus asked if anyone had brought any food. The only one was a young boy with five loaves and two small fish. Jesus began breaking the fish and bread in pieces over and over until more than five thousand people were fed that day. I bet that little boy didn’t feel like he had enough food to meet that need. But God knew something the boy didn’t”: A few fish and loaves of bread are more than enough in the hands of an omnipotent God.

We are More Than Enough Because God Makes Us More Than Enough.

We are a “chosen people.”

Jeremiah 31:3 NLT tells us, “The Lord came to us from far away, saying, ‘I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. So I have helped you come to Me with loving-kindness.’”

Before we can even do a thing, we are enough. How? Jesus proved our worth when He gave His own life for us. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 NIV).

Listen now to this short devotional from Abide based on Jeremiah 31:3. Let God speak to your heart about how you are more than enough as His beloved child.

Try praying this prayer: “Lord, thank you for seeing me as more than enough. You make me enough. You call me your dearly loved, chosen child. I will begin each day acknowledging your everlasting love. I will rest securely in knowing who I am and whose I am. Amen.”
