We often chase influence through numbers and popularity, but God’s perspective is different. In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, the apostle Paul, encouraged Christians to live a life centered on love and honorable work. He wrote:
“Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.”
1 Thessalonians 4:11, New Living Translation
True influence, as Paul highlights, isn’t about social media followers; it’s about loving others and engaging in meaningful work on a small scale. Instead of striving for a large platform, God calls us to be faithful in our current circumstances, focusing on genuine connections and impactful actions in our immediate surroundings.
Despite our human struggles with sin, God’s love and selection of us as His own lay a solid foundation for our lives. The Holy Spirit assures us of our belonging to God, reinforcing the importance of faithfulness and holiness in our daily lives.
While influence is often associated with broad reach, depth can be equally transformative. Life can be like a cluttered apartment needing cleaning and organizing, showing the importance of taking care of the everyday aspects of our lives. Clearing clutter, creating space, and inviting others to share in this newfound clarity symbolize inner purification and openness to divine guidance.
In this metaphorical space, where hard work may go unnoticed by many, there’s potential for spiritual growth and connection with others. By faithfully tending to our immediate environment and embracing the process of renewal, we pave the way for the Holy Spirit to shape us into vessels of profound influence, rooted in authenticity and service.
God, I want to believe that my life matters, and I don’t know how to measure my life’s worth. Help me to see that my value is not in how much I can influence others, but in the fact that I’ve been created and loved by You. Help me to be faithful in whatever work You’ve given me, to do it with diligence and integrity, and to offer it to You. In Jesus’ name: Amen.
