Where’s your focus in your life as a follower of Christ? Are you keeping your eye on the ball? In his letter to the Colossians the Apostle Paul writes,
“So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
Colossians 3:1-2, New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
This shift in perspective is not about neglecting earthly responsibilities but about embracing a new life in Christ marked by mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Paul compares the old sinful ways with the new life believers have in Christ. He urges them to let go of past sins and focus on the transformative power of Christ within them. By fixing our gaze on Jesus, keeping our eye on the ball, we can overcome the distractions of lust, pride, and fear that try to divert our attention from what truly matters.
The call to focus on Christ goes beyond personal virtues. It includes a vision of a renewed existence as described in Revelation. The Apostle John paints a vivid picture of a new heaven and earth. There, God will dwell among His people, wiping away all tears and eliminating pain and suffering. This vision of renewal and victory reinforces the significance of keeping our eyes on the ball. The eternal promises found in Christ hold our gaze.
In essence, Paul and John’s teachings highlight the importance of maintaining a steadfast focus on Jesus throughout life’s challenges and temptations. By prioritizing Christ above all else, we can experience a profound transformation. This leads to a life filled with grace, love, and the hope of a future glory beyond this world’s trials.
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me out of darkness and into the light. Help me to turn away from the sins that try to steal my focus. Help me to turn toward You, and the new life You’ve called me to in Christ. As I gaze on You, may those things of earth, those old sins that used to capture my attention, grow strangely dim and ever more distant. May Your glory and grace light my way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
